By God’s gracious providence, I, like Ruth, “happened to come” (Ruth 2:3) across another excellent insight from Sinclair Ferguson regarding the believer’s sanctification. Thanks to Gospel Muse for this excellent quote.
“The only resources for such sanctification are in Christ. Our sanctification is Christ’s sanctification of himself in our humanity progressively applied to and realized in us through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. It is in this sense that Paul says that ‘Christ Jesus. . . has become for us wisdom from God — that is, our.., holiness’ (1 Cor. 1:30). In the words of Hebrews, ‘Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family’ (ex henos, i.e. ‘are of one’, Heb. 2:11). Sanctification can be ours only by means of the resources of Christ, brought to us through the Holy Spirit as he takes what is Christ’s, reveals it to us, and thus conforms us more and more into his likeness, from one degree of glory to another, as we gaze on the glory of the Lord (2 Cor. 3:18)…we thus see Christ as the author and source and the Spirit as the agent of sanctification…”
“And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption…” 1 Corinthians 1:30- J.F.
