The Freedom of the Gospel and Pornography

Are you free to be the man or woman God has recreated you through the gospel to be? Or, do you struggle with addiction to pornography?

Pornography addiction can begin with something seemingly harmless but soon the desire for more takes over (“…never satisfied are the eyes of man,” Prov. 27:20b).

Pornography grabs its prey and holds its victims in its clutches. It alienates husbands from wives. It attacks and destroys all relationships. It cripples a pastor’s preaching and teaching. It creates massive amounts of shame, guilt and fear.

Many partakers will testify that far from this false idol’s promise of freedom and pleasure, they come to discover how enslaving it is and that it is impossible to break free (““Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin,” (John 8:34).

I have written previously about the critical importance of mortifying sin in our lives, particularly in relation to our online habits.

The only Internet software I use and recommend is Covenant Eyes. I would not even think about having a computer in my home without Covenant Eyes. Internet filters are okay but the most effective method for being “porn free” is accountability software and CE is the best.

If you think you don’t need to protect yourself and that you have everything under control, you are deceived and in danger (“…let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall,” (1 Cor. 10:12). A gospel-driven believer will desire to guard his life and cut off anything that stands in his or her way of enjoying Christ (cf. Matt. 5:30; Titus 2:11-14).

Just to be clear, Covenant Eyes doesn’t make me holy and it will not make you holy! CE will not give you freedom. Christ gives (and has given you!) freedom (Gal. 5:1). What CE will do is provide the necessary boundaries so that your life is free from the constant temptation to make that “click.” CE will shield your life (cut off!) from the enslaving power of false idols so that you can enjoy the freedom that you have in Christ. CE will help you stand firm in the freedom you have in Christ (Gal. 5:1).

Covenant Eyes has just posted its new video online (see above). If you do not currently have Covenant Eyes, I strongly encourage everyone reading this to sign up and begin using it. You will be glad you did. CE will provide the necessary “hedges” so that you are free to enjoy and proclaim the gospel!

“…if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed,” (John 8:37)!

Very good warning. It is a problem and needs to be something that brothers and sisters in Christ support each other and protect each other from. It is na idol for sure. Doug

If there’s anything that I’ve learned from my time with an anti pornography blog (Block-Porn.Org)it’s that pornography addiction is a much wider-spread problem that many people realize. Accountability for your actions is the first, and by far most important, step on the road to recovery. It takes a strong person to realize that they need help, and a courageous one to ask for it.
